In India, we are living in a fast paced environment and travelling is one of the favourite pass times of people to get away from the monotonous humdrum. But, most of the time it is not easy for 48% of the female population in my country. Still, women face society and cultural restrictions and safety concerns which are stopping them from travelling freely. I came up with an idea to provide the opportunity for them to travel independently with confidence. HerTrip is a travel app designed for women in India, where travel packages are crafted exclusively for them by verified travel agencies. The app is designed incorporating the travelling needs of Indian women.
Challenges
Orthodox Mindset
Orthodox families are unapologetic about refusing to let girls and women to travel, either for work or refreshment due to cultural restrictions.
Convincing Family
Convincing them is a quite a task. Families are scared about sending women alone because of lack of trust on unreliable acquaintances.
Misogyny
Handling misogyny is quite daunting because it still exists and our society sometimes tends to take away the basic rights of women.
As women living in India, we tend to experience certain rules and restrictions which are bound to us in our daily activities. To overcome the stigma around equality and women empowerment, we still have a long way to go. But, how long is too long?  That’s why I am on a mission to encourage women to be selfless and unabashed about their decisions.
Problems faced by women
Solutions
  • Difficult to find reliable travel agencies and packages.
  • Boarding and alighting timelines are not safe during early mornings and late nights.
  • There are quite a few Facebook and Whatsapp groups for women travellers, but they are not known to all. There are clashes while deciding the places and payment in the group.
  • Not enough sanitary amenities for women and children.
  • Generic destinations and travel recommendations. Need to travel to unknown places.
  • Want to travel along with new people but unsure due to safety issues.
  • Provide a single platform to view packages by different travel agencies.
  • Compare similar packages by different agencies to get the best deal.
  • Opportunity to find and connect with other women based on similar interests, age and personality traits prior to the trip.
  • Providing genuine reviews by other travellers on trips travelled.
  • Tie up with agencies which provide pick up and drop facilities to boarding and alighting points.
  • Option to send trip details to emergency contacts.
Design Process
Design Thinking is a design methodology that provides a solution-based approach to solving problems. It’s extremely useful in tackling complex problems that are ill-defined or unknown, by understanding the human needs involved, by re-framing the problem in human-centric ways, by creating many ideas in brainstorming sessions, and by adopting a hands-on approach in prototyping and testing.  The design process I followed is as follows - Discover, Define, Ideate, Design and Test.
Research
To understand the needs of the users, I conducted one on one interviews with women of different age groups, profession and  background who travel often or are open to the idea of traveling and exploring new places (Qualitative Research). An online survey was also conducted by preparing a questionnaire and distributing it among women to gather quantitative data in terms of graphs, pie charts and bar diagrams (Quantitative Research).

Personas
After going through the information which was collected through interviews and surveys, I segregated women into three categories as follows -
Empathy Mapping
I created empathy maps to understand my user better. I made me think by putting myself in their shoes and assimilate their thoughts.
Storyboards
I created storyboards so I could understand my product better and also to explain it easily to stakeholders.
Userflow
After the storyboard was done, I decided on three main features of my app which would help solve the problem. The user flow below was mapped by brainstorming about the all the possible tasks that a user can perform in the app.
Card Sorting
Initially the card sorting was done with main feature like - home, packages, chat and travel blogs. Since the travel blogs was not justifying as a main feature, I added it under Home screen in the final card sorting. The blog tab was replaced with profile section, so it can be easily accessible for the user.

Information Architecture
Based on the card sorting, I designed the information which needs to be added for each tab, section and sub section.

Final Screens
I wanted to keep the interaction very clean and minimalistic. Adding hand drawn illustrations makes it more playful and fun to relate with. Since it is for women, I have used shocking pink as the primary colours with a dash of teal green to balance the colours out. The font is Avenir and I have maintained black and shades of grey to show hierarchy in the typography.
